You’ve seen those round marks on swimmers and footballers – big circles all over their backs. Ever wondered what that’s about? That’s cupping therapy, and it’s not just for Olympic athletes. My name’s Peter, and I offer cupping therapy in Glasgow at my clinic. It works, and it’s simpler than you might think.
Let me tell you what cupping therapy actually is, what it feels like, and why those marks aren’t as scary as they look.
So What Is Cupping Therapy?
It’s pretty much what it sounds like. I put cups on your skin and create suction. The cup pulls your skin up – it’s like the opposite of a massage. Instead of pushing down into your muscles, cupping lifts everything up.
I use plastic cups with a little pump to create the suction. No fire, no needles, nothing weird. Just cups, suction, and that’s it.
People have been doing this for thousands of years, but I don’t use it because it’s ancient or trendy. I use it because it actually helps.
What Does It Do?
When the cup pulls your skin up, a few things happen:
More blood gets to the area. The suction brings blood to the surface. More blood means your muscles get more oxygen, more nutrients, and waste gets cleared out faster. That’s why it helps sore, tired muscles.
It loosens things up. You know that tight, stuck feeling? The layer of tissue around your muscles can get stiff and gluey. Cupping helps unstick it so everything moves better.
Tight muscles let go. Something about the pulling makes muscles relax. People often feel their back softening up while the cups are still on.
I usually combine cupping with massage and other hands-on work. It’s one more thing that helps, not a magic cure on its own.
What’s It Good For?
Tight back from sitting at a desk all day? Cupping’s great for that.
Shoulders up around your ears? Yep, works for that too.
Sore after the gym or a long run? Athletes use cupping to recover faster. Works a treat.
That one spot that never loosens up no matter how much you stretch? Cupping can sometimes get to places that massage can’t.
Basically, if it’s tight, sore, or stuck – cupping therapy might help. It’s one of the most popular treatments I offer at my Glasgow clinic.

OK But What About Those Marks?
Yeah, let’s talk about the marks. They look wild, I know. Big purple circles all over your back – people think it’s bruises.
It’s not quite the same as a bruise. The suction pulls blood to the surface, which is why you get the colour. Sometimes it’s light pink, sometimes it’s dark purple. Darker usually means that area was tighter or more congested.
Here’s the thing though – they don’t hurt. Looks dramatic, feels like nothing. They fade in about a week, sometimes less. And the more cupping you have, the lighter they get as your muscles loosen up.
If you’ve got a holiday coming up or something where you don’t want marks showing, just tell me. We can either skip the cupping or put the cups somewhere your clothes will cover.
What Happens When You Come In?
First we’ll have a chat about what’s bothering you. Cupping isn’t right for everything – sometimes massage or something else works better. I’ll tell you straight if I think cupping will help or not.
If we go ahead, you lie face down and I put the cups on. Most people have them on their back or shoulders, but I can do legs, arms, wherever you need it.
What does it feel like?
Weird, honestly. You feel a pull, like something’s tugging your skin upward. It’s strange for the first minute or so, then most people actually find it relaxing. It shouldn’t hurt – if it does, I just let some air out and ease off.
The cups stay on for about 5-15 minutes. Sometimes I leave them in one spot, sometimes I slide them around with oil to cover more area.
Afterwards you might feel a bit chilled out, maybe tired – like you’ve had a really deep massage. Drink some water and take it easy if you can.
How Many Times Do You Need It?
Depends what we’re dealing with.
If you’re just a bit tight and stressed, one session might do the trick. If you’ve got something that’s been bugging you for months, you’ll probably need a few goes at it. Some people come in every now and then just to keep things loose – like a tune-up.
I won’t string you along. If cupping’s not helping after a couple of sessions, we’ll try something else.
Is It Safe?
For most people, yeah, totally fine. But there are a few things to watch for:
If you’re on blood thinners, have really thin skin, or have any broken skin or rashes where the cups would go – we’d skip it. Same if you’re pregnant, there are some areas I’d avoid. And a few other medical things, but I’ll ask you about all that before we start.
Quick Answers
Does it hurt? Shouldn’t do. Feels weird, but not painful.
How long do the marks stick around? Usually a week or so. They don’t hurt at all.
Can I work out after? Light stuff is fine. Maybe skip the heavy session that day.
Does it actually work or is it just in your head? Research is mixed, but my patients feel better. That’s what counts.
Why are some marks darker than others? Tighter areas tend to go darker. As things improve, the marks get lighter.
