Knees are annoying, aren’t they? They hurt going up stairs, they click when you stand, they swell up after a run. And everyone tells you it’s just wear and tear, nothing you can do about it. My name’s Peter, and I’ve been doing knee pain physiotherapy in Glasgow for over 20 years. Most of the time, there’s plenty you can do.

If you’re looking for knee pain treatment in Glasgow, you’re in the right place. Let me explain what’s probably going on with your knee and how I can help.

Why Your Knee Hurts (And Why It Won’t Sort Itself Out)

Your knee is basically two big bones meeting, held together by ligaments, cushioned by cartilage, and controlled by muscles from your hip and calf. There’s a lot going on in there. When one part isn’t pulling its weight, the rest has to work harder – and that’s when things start hurting.

Here’s what most people don’t realise: knee pain often isn’t a knee problem. Weak hips, tight calves, poor foot position – any of these can put your knee under strain. That’s why treating just the knee often doesn’t work, and why proper physio for knee pain looks at the whole leg.

Waiting it out rarely helps either. Muscles get weaker, the knee gets stiffer, and you start avoiding things. Before long you’re walking differently, and now your hip or back hurts too.

What’s Actually Causing Your Knee Pain?

When people come to me looking for a knee specialist in Glasgow, they want to know what’s gone wrong. These are the problems I see most:

Kneecap Pain (Runner’s Knee): Hurts going down stairs, aches after sitting for ages, gets worse when you squat. Your kneecap isn’t gliding where it should. Very common, very fixable with the right knee physio.

Knee Arthritis: Stiff in the morning, achy after activity, maybe a bit swollen. Yes, the joint’s worn – but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the pain. Knee arthritis treatment through physiotherapy takes load off the joint and most people move much better afterwards.

Meniscus and Cartilage Tears: Twisted your knee and now it catches or locks? A lot of these settle down with physiotherapy – surgery isn’t always needed, whatever you’ve read online.

Ligament Injuries: Sports injuries mostly. Anything from a minor sprain to a proper tear. Even bad ones can often be managed without an operation.

Patellar Tendon Problems: Pain just below the kneecap that flares up when you run or jump. Runners and gym-goers get this a lot. Stubborn, but it responds well to the right programme.

Knee Bursitis and Swelling: Puffy knee that hurts when you kneel on it. Usually irritation from overuse or too much time on your knees.

How Peter’s Physiotherapy Treats Your Knee Pain

When you book knee pain treatment with me, we’re not just doing a few stretches and hoping for the best.

First, we work out what’s going on. I’ll ask you loads of questions – when it hurts, what makes it worse, what you’re missing out on. Then I’ll look at how your knee moves, check the ligaments, test your strength.

I’ll also look above and below. Your hips, your ankles, how you walk. Like I said, the knee often gets blamed for someone else’s problem.

Then we get to work:

Hands-On Treatment: Loosening off tight muscles, getting the joint moving properly, working on the tissue around the kneecap. A proper knee massage isn’t just relaxing – it’s targeted work on what’s actually tight. This is usually the bit that makes you feel better quickly.

Knee Strengthening Exercises: This is what actually fixes it. Your quads, glutes, and calves all need to do their job. I’ll give you specific knee pain exercises – not a printout of generic stretches, but movements that target your problem.

Movement Retraining: How you squat, how you walk, how you land when you run. Small changes here make a big difference to how much load goes through your knee.

Extra Treatments When You Need Them: Sometimes we’ll use acupuncture for knee pain, cupping, shockwave therapy, or taping to settle things down while we sort the underlying problem. Whatever helps.

Your First Knee Physiotherapy Appointment

Nothing to worry about. First session’s about an hour. We’ll talk properly about what’s been happening, I’ll examine your knee, and you’ll get a clear explanation of what I think is going on.

Wear something you can move in – shorts are ideal so I can actually see your knee working.

You’ll leave knowing what’s wrong, what we’re doing about it, what to do at home, and roughly how long it’ll take. No vague “let’s see how it goes.”

How Quickly Will Your Knee Pain Improve?

Depends what we’re dealing with, but roughly:

Most people notice a difference after 2-3 sessions. Most knee problems need 4-8 sessions of physiotherapy overall. We usually start weekly, then spread them out as things improve.

The exercises matter more than you’d think. Ten minutes a day makes a huge difference. People who do them get better much faster – it’s that simple.

Arthritis and long-standing knee problems take longer, but they do improve. I’ve had people come in barely able to manage stairs who end up walking miles again.

What You Can Do Right Now for Your Knee Pain

Keep moving. Resting completely makes knees stiffer and weaker. Gentle walking, cycling, swimming – anything that doesn’t hurt.

Ice if it’s swollen. Ten minutes at a time, few times a day.

Heat if it’s stiff. Hot water bottle before you get moving in the morning.

Ease off the stairs. If stairs are killing you, take them one at a time for now. Not forever, just while it settles.

Check your shoes. Worn-out trainers change how your knee loads. Might be time for new ones.

Common Questions About Knee Pain Physiotherapy

Do I need a scan first? Usually not. I can work out what’s going on from examining you. Scans often show “damage” in people with no pain at all, so they’re not as useful as you’d think.

Will I need surgery? Most people don’t. Plenty of problems that look surgical do fine with proper knee physiotherapy. If I think you need a surgeon’s opinion, I’ll say so.

My knee clicks – is that bad? Usually not. Painless clicking is normal. If it clicks and hurts, or catches and locks, that’s worth looking at.

I’ve been told it’s just arthritis. Arthritis is a description, not a life sentence. Loads of people with arthritic knees have no pain at all. Getting stronger genuinely helps.

Does acupuncture help knee pain? For a lot of people, yes. I use it alongside hands-on work and exercises when it fits the problem.

Can I still exercise? Almost always yes. We just might need to change what you’re doing for a while.
